Sand blasted
Security at Pendine was tight - we had to show passports to gain entry. The high-speed test track is set in a large area of sand dunes paradoxically full of birds and flowers.

It's a hard hat site; during the firing itself, all staff must take cover. We were actually confined to the control centre.
Earlier, we saw scientists loading instruments into the third and final penetrator to be tested.
The purpose of the test firings was to check how well the penetrators would withstand being slammed into several tonnes of sand at 1,100km/h (700mph) and whether the instruments inside would survive.
The difference between the penetrators that had already been fired and the one that had yet to be tested was striking.
The blue paint on the fired ones was scraped off and the steel nose cones were distorted.
But despite their battered appearance, Peter Truss of Qinetiq confirmed that they had done their job and protected the instruments inside: "our confidence is growing with every test".
Qinetiq not only contributed to the missile derived design of the penetrators themselves, but to the batteries and communication systems they will carry.
Ultimately, the plan will be to apply this technology to other rocky planets and moons in the Solar System, particularly to Jupiter's icy moon Europa, which may have an ocean below its frozen surface.
Other candidates include Saturn's moons Titan and Enceladus.

"We're developing the technologies now to enable a much more in-depth analysis of these planetary bodies and with the increase in technology that we can apply to these problems, all sorts of possibilities open up," explained Peter Truss.

(CNN) -- The nation's foreclosure crisis threatened a high-profile victim this week: TV legend Ed McMahon, best known as Johnny Carson's sidekick on "The Tonight Show."
Ed McMahon and his wife, Pam, talk to CNN's Larry King about their mortgage problems.
1 of 2 The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that McMahon was $644,000 in arrears on a $4.8 million loan for a home in Beverly Hills, California, and his lender had filed a notice of default.

I lived at the orphanage, so besides teaching four to five English classes a day, I also ate with the kids and hung out with them after school -- it was all very different from my life as a teacher in the U.S. The kids, many of whom were tsunami orphans, didn't speak a lot of English, but somehow we were able to make it work. We'd sing songs, and I'd read them stories, and I had a world map so they could learn the names of other countries. I also brought supplies like crayons and sticky notes, which they just annihilated. When you live in an orphanage, you have to abandon the notion of privacy. Most of the time, we colored, read books, sang songs or danced ("Hokey Pokey" was their favorite). They seemed to enjoy just having someone pay attention to them. One young woman, Agnes, had a beautiful singing voice. At my good-bye party, she gave me an autographed CD of her songs. People really are the same no matter where you go. "Working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for five days, we built three houses. Together with the villagers, we mixed concrete by dumping the ingredients on the ground, adding water, and mixing with a shovel and our feet. Then we'd form a chain and pass buckets of concrete down to the trenches. Some of the smaller kids helped us move cinder blocks, carrying them as far as they could, just so they could participate. I've never been around that kind of poverty for an extended period. You see what people do to survive on a daily basis, and it hits home that this is their reality. You can write a check to a worthy cause, but you don't see the impact of what you've done. "On the first day at a soup kitchen, we were organized into different stations -- I chopped onions while others did salad prep. Volunteering changes your perspective and opens your eyes to things you weren't aware of -- like how many different kinds of people are homeless. Other students come back from spring break and talk about how drunk they were. I was talking with some of the guys from my trip, and we felt we had so much more fun. "During our two-week trip, we dug the foundation for a school. We also set up a one-day clinic, and we saw over 1,000 people. (I'm a physician's assistant.) One of our first cases was a boy whose throat and stomach hurt. He had been eating sand and rocks because his body craved various minerals. We were able to educate him -- and many others -- on the importance of eating meat and leafy greens whenever possible. And by questioning different people, we were able to identify a specific water hole as being home to a parasite, and we told everyone to avoid it. The nation's unemployment rate took its biggest jump in more than two decades in May, according to a government report. To the latter point, Angelina explains that adopting kids from all over the world (three different continents…so far!) was “absolutely intentional”:
“When I was growing up I wanted to adopt, because I was aware there were kids that didn’t have parents. It’s not a humanitarian thing, because I don’t see it as a sacrifice. It’s a gift. We’re all lucky to have each other.
“I look at Shiloh—because, obviously, physically, she is the one that looks like Brad and I when we were little—and say, ‘If these were our brothers and sisters, how much would we have known by the time we were six that it took into our 30s and 40s to figure out?’ I suppose I’m giving them the childhood I always wished I had.”
And not only that, her freaking stable of nannies resembles a mini-U.N.:
“We don’t ever have anybody spend the night. We may have to adjust that when the next one comes. But we do have ladies that work with us, and they’re also from different cultures and backgrounds. One lady’s a Vietnamese teacher—wonderful. One is of Congolese descent from Belgium. Another is from the States and is really creative and does art programs.”

t was good until the release of Outrageous. We started getting too familiar with each other and familiarity breeds contempt. He thought my quotes were downmarket and a lot of things I said did not make sense to him. So I said, well, don’t try to change me or tell me what to do and what not to. And we parted ways.

Yeah, I am sure because already a lot of people are talking to me. I am in the process of firming up plans for my next film, Aagey Se U Turn, with T-Series. It is a comedy with my production house will produce and may have Ritesh Desmukh in it.

Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie and what I like about them is that in the midst of giving these complex emotional performances, their slip may be showing, their bare assets may show, there is no difference in their expressions, they are so comfortable with it. Halle Berry for instance had this intense lovemaking scene in Monster's Ball, where they are acting just the way two adults would be in bed, and then the next moment she is back to playing Halle Berry. They are all so comfortable with nudity and being these fantastic actresses at the same time. I think it is a great combination of being a stunner and a fab actress at the same time.

Never. I would like to die in a bikini! I have a strong attachment to what I do, I believe one needs to have loads of confidence and attitude to wear a bikini without a sarong.

Well, I have been told by mobile content providers that my images are hugely popular with Internet users, and they are the most downloaded on mobiles as well. People find my images fabulous and exciting and they like to use them as wallpapers.

a ha ha! Well, whenever I am facing the camera I love to tease, I love to play this naughty girl, teasing, flirting, seducing. In my mind I am conversing with the camera. I am like, 'So, you wanna take me to bed? So take me to bed…'

Well, it is not just about wearing a bikini and striking a pose. It is about what comes out from your persona, it is about, 'What signals are you sending!'

Yeah my mother wanted me to stay back and do a spa or a beauty salon like her, get married. She wanted me to pursue medicine.

Umm… yeah, I said something like as an Indian I think Pakistan has a mental block against stretching out a hand towards friendship and unity. I did not have amazing costumes like the other contestants in all the rounds. I just had one saree to wear throughout. That was it. That gave me a lot of confidence, I was like 'okay fine, beauty is not only about chiseled features it is also confidence and how well you speak and what comes from within'. And then I told my parents I want to pursue something in the glamour field. I did not want to pursue science. Then one fine day I said I wanna go to Bollywood and then I wish to go to Hollywood. I packed my stuff -- I had a Skoda then -- drove down to Bombay, put up with some of dad's relatives. My dad was like 'No way am I helping you out.' I started calling up people and that's how it all began.
Do you remember the question?
Yes, I do. I was asked what did I think of Pakistan as an Indian and India as a Hindustani. They were stunned with my answer and I vaguely remember what I said.

Yeah, I guess, I guess. When somebody would ask me who is your best friend I would say my books. I was that boring. I guess I reached a point in my life when I wanted to break free and know what happens in the outside world. That's when I told my daddy I did not want to pursue medicine and not be a doctor like him. That was a huge setback for him. He thought I would take …ummm…what's that course called…Science in Junior College. But I opted for Maths, Eco and Commerce.
After two years of college I thought of participating in a beauty pageant, just like that. And when I told my parents I want to take part in the Miss Andhra pageant, they were like: 'Kaun se angle se you consider yourself a beauty queen?' Well, I said I was confident, had no stage fright and could answer well. These were my plus points. Does not matter if I was not a stunner, because at that time I was not. I weighed 60 kg, had a double chin and looked like a mum of six kids.

All throughout my school life and first two years of college. I was really sick of indulging in studies, not having a social life, not having friends.
How did you land up in Bombay?
As a school kid I was always into academics and all kinds of competition like elocution, recitation, drama. Every year, I would be the school topper. Then I just wanted to break free from being this studious person.
